Cithara octochorda in the NUL Music Collection

Cithara octochorda (Eight-string zither) is the first and the most comprehensive printed collection of liturgical songs, which includes texts in Latin and the Kajkavian dialect and the musical scores intended for choral and folk singing. Cithara octochorda is one of the older and more valuable printed materials kept in the NUL Music Collection. Cithara was published in three editions – the first and second, from 1701 and 1723, were printed in Vienna, and the third edition was printed in Zagreb in 1757. All three editions are part of the holdings of the National and University Library in Zagreb. Some of the songs which have been preserved until today as part of the tradition of popular singing of liturgical songs originate precisely from Cithara, for example, Narodil nam se kralj nebeski, O detece me predrago and Vu to vreme godišća. The digitized third edition of Cithara octochorda is available as part of the Digitized Heritage website of the National and University Library in Zagreb.
