Copyright and libraries today

The world of new media characterized by mass digitization and the growing use of electronic books necessitates the creation of a suitable legal framework which would warrant the protection of copyright in the digital environment. The existing unsettled copyright issues slow down and obstruct the digitization of works preserved in libraries, so these issues should be resolved in a way which would suit all interested parties, i.e. libraries and their users, as well as authors and publishers. Aleksandra Horvat, Ph.D., Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, writes about copyright and the unsatisfactory legal status of the book in the digital environment and gives an in-depth overview of the obstacles that the library professionals are facing in the 21st century.
