“The Hidden World of Old Books”: Call for participation in the scientific symposium with international participation
From 28 to 30 May 2018, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will be hosting The Hidden World of Old Books (Skriveni svijet starih knjiga), a special interactive exhibition spotlighting book heritage and the importance of its preservation. Organised with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the exhibition will give its visitors first-hand experience of valuable books and introduce them to secrets otherwise exclusively known to conservation and restoration specialists.
The exhibition programme will include a homonymous scientific symposium, which will take place on 29 May 2018 and address a wide array of issues such as the implementation of scientific methods in the analyses of book material, models of book production and decoration, book binding techniques, book illustrations, book dating techniques, risk assessment and monitoring of old books, book damage assessment, protection techniques, etc.
The exhibition will also include two workshops on various book decoration and illustration techniques (Vodeni znakovi ili filigrani na papiru; Tehnike otiskivanja ilustracija). The workshops are open to booklovers of all types and ages, including schoolchildren, who may expect to get acquainted with a wide range of details indicating a book’s physical condition, examples of book preservation methods and methods of graphic reproduction of old books, with particular emphasis on watermarks and illustrations reproduction.
