On 15 March 2023, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the opening of Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again, a National Library of Ireland exhibition spotlighting the life and work of the great Irish poet and the 1995 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. The valuable exhibition’s display at the Croatian national library was organised through its cooperation with the Embassy of Ireland to the Republic of Croatia and it will remain on view until 27 March 2023.

After a welcome address by the Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb Dr Ivanka Stričević and a subsequent address by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland to the Republic of Croatia His Excellency Mr Ruaidhri Mark Dowling, the work of one of the greatest Irish contemporary writers, the 10th anniversary of whose death Ireland is marking this year, was presented in greater detail by the Associate Professor at the Department of English of the University of Rijeka’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Aidan O’Malley.

Expressing her pleasure at this particular cooperation initiative between the two national libraries as the means for both libraries to promote their respective national heritage, NSK Director General Dr Stričević also voiced hope for the continuation of their cooperation through a presentation of Croatia’s literary heritage in Ireland sometime soon.
