From 19 to 23 September 2022, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the first meeting and a presentation-and-workshop programme held as part of Citizen-Enhanced Open Science in Southeastern Europe Higher Education Knowledge Hubs (CeOS_SE Project), an Erasmus+ research project aimed at including European citizens in pan-European efforts focusing on open science. Headed by the Association of European Research Libraries (Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche, LIBER), the project is realised through partnership between other seven institutions which apart from the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) includes the University Library of Southern Denmark (Denmark), University of Turin (Italy), University of Patras (Greece), Belgrade University Library Svetozar Marković (Serbia), University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (Bulgaria) and University of Cyprus (Cyprus).

The one-week programme was the first opportunity for the representatives of the partner institutions to hold a live meeting since January 2022, when the CeOS_SE Project was launched. Its programme focused on exchanging citizen science-related experiences and insights and discussing opportunities for the inclusion of citizens in the development of scientific fields through libraries in the region that the project is targeting, i.e. south eastern Europe.

The partner’s representatives presented their libraries and the citizen science-related activities that they organised as part of the Project, particularly those categorised as PR2A2, run under the supervision of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) and focusing on encouraging and channelling citizen engagement in open science through cooperation between university and public libraries, such as the one between NSK and the Ivanić-Grad City Library resulting in the preparation of the Bees, life, people thematic collection on the website of the Croatian Web Archive.

Workshops held as part of the programme focused on discussions thematising the future development of the project’s activities and ways to improve their management, quality and sustainability. A workshop organised by NSK, entitled Don’t limit your challenges – challenge your limits, presented challenges in organising citizen science-oriented activities in cooperation with public libraries.
