Objavljeno 5.12.2022.

The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) invites Croatian publishers to take part in Croatia’s annual national best book design competition (Hrvatska lijepa knjiga) by submitting their best designed titles published in 2022. Open until 30 December 2022, the competition is aimed at including the titles which will be selected by a judging panel in two major book events in Europe – the international Best Book Design from all over the World competition, which is held every year as part of the Leipzig Book Fair, and the Book Art International exhibition, traditionally taking place as part of the world-famous Frankfurt Book Fair. The logotype of Croatia’s national best book design competition.

The national competition is part of a larger, international competition, organised every year by the German Book Art Foundation (Stiftung Buchkunst) with the aim of promoting the greatest creative accomplishments of art editors, graphic artists and printers all around the world.

The call applies to titles published in 2022, in the following categories – literature, science, monographs on art and artists, photo monographs, children’s books and books for youth, school books, bibliophile editions, reprints and catalogues. The titles are to be submitted by post (at Nacionalna i sveučilišna knjižnica u Zagrebu, Ulica Hrvatske bratske zajednice 4, 10000 Zagreb, specifying “Hrvatska lijepa knjiga”), and a filled-out form with all the required details is to be emailed at marketing@nsk.hr.

After the international presentation of the greatest achievements in book design from across the world as part of the Leipzig and Frankfurt book fairs, all the winning titles selected as part of national competitions will be included among the holdings of the German Museum of Books and Writing, which operates as part of the German National Library.

When it comes to the international success of best designed Croatian books, three Croatian titles were shortlisted as part of the Best Book Design from all over the World competition so far – the 1996 edition of The Marvelous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapić the Apprentice (Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića), the classic of Croatian children’s literature by a six-time Nobel nominee Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, for design by Mihajlo Arsovski, a 1997 title thematising Pope’s 1997 visit to Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sveti Otac Ivan Pavao II. u pastirskom pohodu 12. i 13. travnja 1997, Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina), for design by Zoran Filipović, and Fiume Fantastika, the 2021 title published by the University of Rijeka and the Oaza Books company, authored by Vedran Mimica, Maroje Mrduljaš and Idis Turato and designed by Maša Poljanec and Leo Kirinčić.
