NSK bibliography and exhibition honouring Tonko Maroević’s legacy

Objavljeno 25.2.2022.

On 24 February 2022, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) organised and hosted a programme spotlighting the legacy of Tonko Maroević (1941-2020), the outstanding Croatian writer, art historian, publicist and Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Presenting a bibliography of Maroević’s works in the Library’s collections and the related exhibition (Riznica riječi Tonka Maroevića u Nacionalnoj i sveučilišnoj knjižnici u Zagrebu), prepared with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media, the programme included addresses by the Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb Dr Ivanka Stričević, Head of the NSK Print Collection and the bibliography’s editor-in-chief Tamara Ilić Olujić, Research Associate Dr Ivana Mance and Senior Research Associate Dr Petar Prelog from the Institute of Art History, Head of the Croatian National Bibliography Department and the bibliography’s editor Dr Lobel Machala, and the participation of Maroević’s close friend and associate artist Goran Matović.

The role of Tonko Maroević as a poet, essayist, translator, researcher of Croatia’s contemporary art and art and literary critic in Croatia’s culture and science is immeasurable. Considering his years-long active and fruitful cooperation with the National and University Library in Zagreb, it is everything but surprising that the Library considered it necessary to prepare a bibliography and exhibition that will bring together his works.

The bibliography of Maroević’s works in the Library’s collections includes over 1,400 titles and vividly documents his dedicated and extensive work. Particularly standing out in it is the bibliography of print portfolios to which Maroević contributed as the author of forewords and afterwords or as their editor-in-chief.

The exhibition presenting the bibliography, remaining on view until 10 March 2022, features works selected from Maroević’s exceptionally rich oeuvre, ranging from his initial works of poetry and translations, through numerous monographs thematising visual artists, literary and art reviews, to print portfolios and exhibition catalogues that he contributed to.

Epitomising Maroević’s dedication to relying on old-fashioned tools in his active interactions with contemporary cultural phenomena, a typewriter displayed at the exhibition opening provided an opportunity for the visitors to symbolically write a message to this as great as kind a giant of Croatian contemporary culture.

…for Tonko, the National and University Library in Zagreb was a place where he would gladly come, and come to stay, bringing with him calm and serenity, and inspiring certainty that what he and the Library worked on will be done well. This publication is thus a kind of an homage to a human being who worked tirelessly and left a bright mark among people he worked with.
