Get ready for Croatian Book Night 2019: Heroes wanted!

Objavljeno 22.3.2019.

On 23 April 2019, the National and University Library in Zagreb will host a special programme organised as part of the eight edition of Croatian Book Night, an annual national programme aimed at the popularisation of reading and promotion of books. Apart from wishing to prompt a wider public debate on the social status of the book and the importance of values associated with it in the contemporary society, Croatian Book Night is also organised as a way of marking World Book and Copyright Day (23 April) and Croatian Book Day (22 April).

Like in all of its previous editions, this year’s Croatian Book Night will again be organised in bookstores, second-hand and antiquarian bookshops, all types of libraries, various public and educational institutions, with the aim of highlighting the love of books and its potential to bring us all together through events such as book launches, public readings, get-togethers with authors, workshops, and the like.

The National and University Library in Zagreb invites all organisations, companies, institutions and individuals interested in taking part in this year’s Croatian Book Night to submit their programme of events online, until 29 March 2019. It will be possible to submit programmes of events even after this deadline, however the organisers will not be able to guarantee to deliver the promotional material on time.

The theme of Croatian Book Night 2019 is Our Best-Loved Book and Comic Book Heroes, occasioned by several significant anniversaries marked this year, i.e. the 180th anniversary of the publication of Mikhail Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time (Герой нашего времени), 80th anniversary of Marvel Comics, 50th anniversary of Alan Ford, an Italian comic book hugely popular in Croatia and other ex-Yugoslav countries, 90th anniversary of the first appearance of Popeye the Sailor, 50th anniversary of the birth and 20th anniversary of the death of Edvin Biuković, an extremely accomplished and world-famous Croatian comic strip artist, etc. They all give us an opportunity to remind ourselves of our favourite book and comic book characters, which we identified with while growing up, which took us on exciting journeys and showed us new worlds, undertook the most difficult missions, and amazed us with their courage, wit and perseverance. The 2019 Croatian Book Night programme, addressing all generations of the lovers of all types of literature, wishes to encourage us to explore all the ways in which these heroes have inspired us and touched our lives, to ask ourselves how come that such fictional characters may be so important to us and how fiction may help us to cope with the challenges of the real world.

Since this year’s Croatian Book Night programme will be taking place during the school holidays, the 2019 Croatian Book Night Organising Committee and Croatian Association of School Librarians are together organising a literary competition for young book and comic book enthusiasts with the aim of encouraging, and rewarding, their literary creativity, and artistic expression in general.

The organisers of the Croatian Book Night programme are again the Publishers and Booksellers Association of the Croatian Chamber of Economy, National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb City Libraries, Publishers’ Reprographic Rights Association – ZANA (Udruga za zaštitu prava nakladnika), Knjižni blok – Inicijativa za knjigu pro-book association, a books-and-culture-oriented web portal Moderna vremena and the Croatian Association of School Librarians.
