On 12 and 13 May 2022, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted online the Eleventh Festival of Croatian Digitisation Projects, the 2022 edition of the Library’s annual programme spotlighting issues surrounding the digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage, digital resources management systems, digital products and services provided by cultural institutions and the most recent digitisation projects in the heritage sector.

This year’s D-fest opened with introductory addresses by the Envoy of the Croatian Minister of Culture and Media and Director of the Ministry’s Directorate for Archives, Libraries and Museums Anuška Deranja Crnokić and NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stričević.

The Festival’s programme started with presentations which provided an overview of the activities conducted so far as part of e-Culture, currently the largest national digitisation project in Croatia, aimed at the development of infrastructure for the management of digital heritage and the strengthening of heritage institutions with regard to the digitisation of their resources, permanent storage of digital resources, digital unification and the development of digital heritage-related services. The e-Culture project was presented by the representatives of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media and its partner institutions, which along with the National and University Library in Zagreb are the Croatian State Archives, Museum of Arts and Crafts and Croatian Radio Television. Subsequent presentations focused on European cultural sector policies and projects dealing with the digital transformation of heritage institutions, but also with the use of digital resources in education and e-learning. Speakers presenting the projects of various institutions focusing on digitisation and the development of digital products and services and the related poster session rounded off the programme of the Festival’s first day.

The Festival’s second day spotlighted presentations thematising ideas and objectives behind the technical aspects of the digitisation of heritage, also featuring the most frequent issues that Croatian digitisation professionals deal with, ranging from those related to the results of large and years-long systematic digitisation projects and their contextualisation through online exhibitions, through those associated with the participation of Croatian digitisation professionals in international European digitisation projects to those arising from new digitisation-related cooperation projects and innovative tools for the promotion of digital heritage in the digital environment.

With the record-breaking number of participants, D-fest once again, in its second online edition, managed to provide insight into various aspects of the digitisation of heritage as well as into the management and use of digital heritage and thus opened opportunities for the education and further development of digitisation professionals and their partners.
