Best designed books published in 2022 selected as part of 2023 “Best Book Design from all over the World” competition
On 30 March 2023, the jury panel of the 2023 Best Book Design from all over the World competition selected 14 best designed books in the world published in 2022. The competition, which this year attracted 570 submitted titles from 30 countries, included 18 books by the Croatian publishers selected at the Croatian national best book design competition organised by the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) which, along with other winning titles selected as part of all other national competitions, will be displayed at the Leipzig Book Fair and included among the holdings of the German Museum of Books and Writing, which operates as part of the German National Library.

A 5-member international jury team, including Croatian designer and co-founder of Oaza collective Maša Poljanec, awarded the first prize, the prestigious Golden Letter, to Susi + Ueli Berger. Kunst am Bau und im öffentlichen Raum 1968–2008 [Susi + Ueli Berger. Art in architecture and public space 1968–2008] (Switzerland). Fotografie als Motiv / Photography as Motif (Austria) won the Gold Medal, the Silver Medal went to Chez Schnabel (Germany) and Matter (Switzerland), while the Bronze Medal was awarded to :KLOVN (Denmark), Architecture of Dismantling and Restructuring (The Netherlands), Miriam Cahn (Switzerland), Ode to Construction (Finland) and The Polyhedrists (Switzerland). Honorary awards went to Capturing Nature (The Netherlands), Magdalena Abakanowicz (Poland), Radical Passion (Poland), Re-Constitution ’21 (Greece) and The Selected Works of Samuel Beckett (South Korea).
The Best Book Design from all over the World competition has been taking place every year since 1963 and a Frankfurt-based German Book Art Foundation (Stiftung Buchkunst) has been in charge of its organisation since 1991. Croatia has participated in it since gaining independence, with the National and University Library in Zagreb acting as the organiser of the national best book design competition (Hrvatska lijepa knjiga) since 1996.
