#BeActive: NSK marks European Week of Sport 2022
From 26 to 30 September 2022, the European Documentation Centre operating as part of the National and University Library in Zagreb (EDC NSK) and the Zagreb Faculty of Kinesiology jointly organised a programme marking the 2022 European Week of Sport (Vježbaj u Knjižnici!). Held under the slogan #BeActive, the programme was prepared with the support of the European Commission Representation in Croatia and the Croatian Ministry of Tourism and Sport for the purpose of promoting healthy lifestyle and tackling a severe crisis brought about by the lack of physical activity among European citizens.
The exercise programme was taking place every morning, between 8.30 and 9.00, in the Library’s grand lobby. Led by the Faculty’s kinesiology practitioners Tena Matolić, Tihana Nemčić and Antonio Martinko and open both to the Library’s staff and to all interested users, the programme was specifically tailored to standards characteristic of workplace workout and to the need to counteract the negative effects of sedentary behaviour associated with studying for long hours and the time-consuming preparation of research papers and theses.
Also, on 27 September 2022, the programme featured talks on surviving in nature (Preživljavanje u prirodi). The speakers, kinesiology practitioner and Assistant Lecturer at the Zagreb Faculty of Kinesiology Nikola Starčević and a member of the Zagreb team of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service Perica Matijević, presented what preparations are required before venturing into nature, gave useful navigation and orienteering tips, tips on how to react and protect oneself in potentially dangerous situations, etc.
The programme’s success and the positive reactions of the participants makes EDC NSK and the Library extra motivated to once again join the European Week of Sport next year and thus both help raise public awareness about the importance of physical activity and promote libraries as places where one can both get informed and learn in this context as well as get literally active.
Being widely recognised as partners in achieving the outcomes of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, libraries organising physical activity-oriented programmes contribute to the successful implementation of the Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goal 3, focusing on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
