“The Voices of Art”: NUL marking International Week of the Deaf and International Day of Deaf People
Marking the International Week of the Deaf, which is taking place from 21 to 27 September 2015, and International Day of Deaf People, which will this year be held on 26 September, the National and University Library in Zagreb will be hosting a special exhibition entitled The Voices of Art.
The exhibition will feature a selection of works by three young Croatian artists – academic painter and graphic artist Vanja Jović, fine art photographer Robert Ravnić and academic painter Mirela Mateljak, whose authentic artistic voices reveal their unique perception of the world in which, owing to their own hearing disabilities, they encounter a number of specific difficulties.
Through their love of art and artistic creativity, these three artists make us hear their inner voices and sense the most profound of their emotions and thoughts that they wish to share with other people in their surrounding community in order to advance mutual understanding. Since communication between people with hearing disabilities and those not facing such challenges is frequently made difficult by various obstacles, this exhibition is a good opportunity to change that by getting to know each other better and learning more both about one another as well as about our own selves. (From the text about the exhibition by Charlotte Frank).
Apart from the works of these three artists, the exhibition will also feature the journals and other publications of various organisations and associations of people with hearing disabilities which are held as part of the Library’s collections. Furthermore, visitors will be able to see several exhibition catalogues and monographs on Slava Raškaj, the Croatian most famous painter with hearing disabilities whose several original drawings are preserved as part of the Library’s Print Collection.
By organising this exhibition, the National and University Library in Zagreb is for the first time joining the marking of the International Week of the Deaf and International Day of Deaf People.
The Voices of Art exhibition opened on 22 September and will be on view until 26 September 2015.
