NSK representatives at an international conference of the National Library of Serbia on special library collections
The representatives of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) participated in Special Collections in the Context of Cultural Heritage Protection and Cultural Development Fostering, an international conference organised and hosted by the National Library of Serbia from 2 to 4 October 2017 in Belgrade.
The conference brought together many professionals in the field of special library collections management, researchers and librarians, whose presentations focused on this specific type of library collections in terms of their importance in the context of the protection of cultural heritage, but also in terms of their attractiveness and inspirational potential when it comes to (library) users. It was organised as a way of marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the National Library of Serbia’s Special Collections Department with the purpose of bringing attention to the role of this type of collections in library activity and their influence on library development.
In a session entitled Old Maps – New Values, Head of the NSK Map Collection Mira Miletić Drder and NSK Digital Library Adviser Sofija Klarin Zadravec presented the Cartographic Material Collection, which is currently being developed as part of the NSK Digital Collections portal.
In a panel discussion on web archiving, NSK Senior Librarian Ingeborg Rudomino and NSK Library Adviser Karolina Holub presented the Croatian Web Archive as a contemporary special collection of the National and University Library in Zagreb, giving an overview of its history and announcing its future activities.
Head of the NSK Music Collection Tatjana Mihalić presented the activities of this special NSK collection, with special emphasis on its digital music collection, which is currently under development, and a project aimed at the migration of the Collection’s music material on outdated media to new formats.
Head of the NSK Print Collection Tamara Ilić Olujić presented the Collection’s activities and possibilities for its further development in the digital environment.
Many library professionals heading special collections, as well as present specialists in the field of digital library development, came together through meetings organised with the purpose of enabling the exchange of experiences in the management of special library collections, digitisation of their content and development of new services.
