NSK part of the “Miranda – the Roma Holocaust. WHO’S AFRAID OF THE WHITE MAN?” international exhibition tour
On 26 January 2017, the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which based on the United Nations General Assembly resolution is annually marked on 27 January, an international tour of the exhibition Miranda – the Roma Holocaust. WHO’S AFRAID OF THE WHITE MAN? was announced at the Parliament of Finland, in Helsinki. The tour is organised by the Finnish Creative Association for Arts and Culture Drom, whose president Veijo Baltzar, who is also Finnish Cultural Counsellor and one of the world-leading Roma writers and artists, is the author of the exhibition. The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will also be part of this exhibition tour and will host Miranda at the end of June 2017.
Since 2012 this exhibition has been put on all around Finland and during the next two years it will be featured as the central part of Through Miranda’s Eyes 2017–2018, an international touring project funded as part of the EU Europe for Citizens programme as well as from the resources provided by Sweden’s and Finland’s cultural funds. Miranda – the Roma Holocaust. WHO’S AFRAID OF THE WHITE MAN? deals with the silent genocide against Roma people throughout the Second World War, and during its tour across Finland, as part of which from September 2013 to March 2014 it was put on at the National Museum of Finland, it attracted around one million visitors.
The aim behind Through Miranda’s Eyes is to provoke intercultural dialogue and, using the example of the publicly almost entirely neglected Roma holocaust, provide a brand new perspective on European history and thus hopefully prevent its dark parts from happening again. Presenting Miranda as the Roma Anne Frank in an innovative way that managed to attract large audiences and owing to its being the first exhibition ever to feature the theme of the Roma holocaust which was also entirely produced by Roma themselves, Miranda – the Roma Holocaust. WHO’S AFRAID OF THE WHITE MAN? has so far become highly recognisable at international level. During its international presentation within the already mentioned Through Miranda’s Eyes project, this valuable exhibition will also be put on at the National and University Library in Zagreb.
Apart from Croatia, the exhibition will also visit Albania, Argentina, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Ukraine. The exhibition’s finale has been scheduled for spring 2018, when it will be put on at the European Parliament, in Brussels.
