On 28 March 2019, the National and University Library in Zagreb hosted the opening of Latvia’s Century, a special exhibition marking the centenary of the restoration of Latvia’s sovereignty, which will remain on view until 19 April 2019.

Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb Tatijana Petrić and President of the Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis welcomed the exhibition visitors, among whom were ambassadors, the representatives of the Croatian diplomatic corps, Government of the Republic of Croatia, Croatian Parliament, ministries and public institutions in Croatia.

Director General Petrić pointed out how Latvia and Croatia are bonded by their similar histories, also shared by other nations in Europe which, not having their nation state, had to struggle hard to preserve their language and national identity stemming from their rich cultural heritage.

The President of the Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis emphasised the difficult path of the Latvian people to independence.

President Vējonis also visited the Library’s Manuscripts and Old Books Collection, where Head of the Collection Irena Galić Bešker presented the Collection’s holdings.

The exhibition presents the historical developments leading to the establishment of the Republic of Latvia, from the First World War, through the interwar period and Soviet rule, to present-day democratic Latvia, an EU member state.
