The Symposium marking the 530th anniversary of the first Croatian printed book, Misal po zakonu rimskoga dvora (1483), will be held on 24 May 2013 in Roč in Istria, starting at 11 a.m. The symposium has been organized by the Roč Section of the Chakavian Assembly and co-organized by the Open College ‘Augustin Vivoda’ from Buzet.

The National and University Library in Zagreb, acting as a partner institution in this special programme, preserves among its treasures two original copies of this Croatian incunabulum, of which one will be displayed in Roč as part of the Symposium’s programme. The programme will be opened by Vladimir Pernić, President of the Roč Section of the Chakavian Assembly, Dunja Seiter-Šverko, Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb, and Josip Bratulić, Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a coordinator of the Symposium and representative of the City of Buzet, a sponsor of the Symposium.

Misal po zakonu rimskoga dvora is the first Croatian printed book, which appeared only 28 years after the completion of the Guttenberg 42-line Bible. It is also the first missal in Europe that was not printed in the Latin script or language. The appearance of this missal printed in the Croatian language and script gives evidence of the social, economic, cultural and intellectual potential of Croats in the second half of the 15th century.

The lionhearted Mijat Tomić, Katarina Kosača and Sveti Juraj (St. George) are only some of the historical characters that Dubravko Horvatić, the anniversary of whose death we are commemorating today, brought back to life in his historical short stories and novels. We also associate with his name the short stories Grički top and Stanari u slonu, the indispensable titles in required school reading. However, Horvatić was not only a children’s writer.

He was born in Zagreb on 9 December 1939 where he finished his secondary education at the Zagreb reputable academically-oriented school (Klasična gimnazija) and later graduated from the then Faculty of Philosophy, today’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (majoring in comparative literature and history of art). He began his career as head of the Student Centre Gallery, after which he became the secretary of the Croatian Writers’ Association. He was editor of several children’s magazines and periodicals.

Despite the fact that for almost twenty years he was on the fringes of the Croatian literary scene, he continued to write tirelessly, thus piling up a literary treasure which only later became available to readers.

As a poet (Bedem, Bašćina, Ponor, 1992), dramatist (Sveti Juraj i zmaj, Atenska tiranija, Ban Khuen Hedervary) and novelist (Dar Gospodara tame, Olovna dolina, Đavo u podne), he was absorbed in issues relating to national history and modernity. He also wrote critical reviews in the field of visual arts and literature (Pleter oko slike, Nepostojeći hrvatski pisci) and publicist writings (Ime zla).

In 1992 he became Vice-President of the Central Croatian Cultural and Publishing Society (Matica hrvatska). From 1995 to 1998 he was chief editor of Hrvatsko slovo, a cultural weekly. He received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his literary work.

He forever left us on 20 May 2004.

The name of this noted writer is also associated with one of Croatian literary awards, the Dubravko Horvatić Award, which is given for best accomplishments in prose and poetry published in the sections Hrvatska proza (Croatian prose) and Hrvatska poezija (Croatian poetry) in the cultural journal Hrvatsko slovo.

The Online Catalogue of the National and University Library in Zagreb contains nearly 330 records on works by Horvatić.

On Saturday, 18 May 2013, International Museum Day will be marked around the world, under the theme Museum (memory + creativity) = social change. The purpose of the marking of this day is to draw attention to the value of cultural heritage and to the significant role that museums have in the preservation of that heritage.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) initiated the marking of this day in 1977, and in 1980 it was introduced in Croatia on the initiative of the Museum Documentation Centre.

The marking of International Museum Day last year included 32,000 museums from 129 countries and in Croatia 110 museums participated in it with over 300 different events and programmes.

This year the marking of International Museum Day will be joined together with the programme of the European Night of Museums, which since 2005 has been taking place in the European museums. The European Night of Museums was launched on the initiative and under the organization of a special board for museums at the French Ministry of Culture and Communication with the purpose of creating all-including European cultural community, which would serve as a means for the presentation of cultural assets of individual European countries.

In 1985 in Milan, Italy the Council of the European Union reached the decision on declaring 9 May as the day of the commemoration of Europe Day and it has been marked ever since.

On that day in 1950 French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman put forward his proposal for the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community, known as the Schuman Declaration. The purpose of Schuman’s proposal was to reconcile Germany and France and create the European federation. The process of cooperation and integration already started in 1951 by negotiations between six countries and on 1 November 1993 the European Union was formally established by the Maastricht Treaty.

The population of the European Union is currently over 500 million inhabitants living in 27 states, and this year Croatia will also become its member state.

In a week which includes the date of the Schuman Declaration, 9 May, and the date of the formation of the Council of Europe, 5 May, Croatia marks its European Week. This year’s, fourteenth European Week included a number of events involving non-governmental organizations, bodies of government administration, public institutions, elementary and secondary schools, as well as the general public. The Week’s programme started by the multimedia exhibition entitled Ja – građanin EU (I – A Citizen of the EU) opened by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Croatia Paul Vandoren. This year has been declared the European Year of Citizens and the exhibition accordingly focuses on citizens and their rights as well as the ways in which they may enforce these rights.

This year the celebration of Europe Day took place at the National and University Library in Zagreb.

What is the extent of newspaper digitisation in European libraries? As part of the Europeana Newspapers project, which aims to aggregate and refine newspaper content to the freely accessible online service Europeana, The European Library undertook a survey to identify and analyse all newspaper collections digitized by national, research and public libraries in Europe by 2012. A series of twelve questions was circulated with a focus on newspaper titles and time range, metadata in use, data distribution capabilities, and quality of digitisation including the technologies used for refinement. The survey also helped identify new potential partners. The most important findings of the survey are set out below:

Access to digitised newspapers is nearly always free of charge.
Of the 47 respondents, at least 40 (85%) offered free access to their digitised newspapers. Only one library had pay per view, whilst another three offered subscription services for users (i.e. paid access per day or per month). Only four libraries licensed their newspaper contents to other groups (e.g. schools and universities).

Access to twentieth-century content remains problematic.
Over half of the surveyed libraries (27 out of 47; 57%) have a cut off date beyond which they will not publish digitised newspapers on the web. Most frequently, this is based on a 70 year sliding scale, meaning that content after 1942 is inaccessible in digital form. 23% (eleven out of 47) had an agreement with a rights organisation so that in-copyright digitised newspapers could be published. However, this tended to be restricted to individual titles rather than collective agreements for complete collections.

There is still much to be done to exploit the richness of digitised newspaper content.
36% (17 out of 47) of the surveyed libraries have not used any form of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on their digitised newspaper content, meaning that searching through the full text of newspaper content is not possible. And while 64% have used OCR, only 17 of the libraries (36%) exposed the resulting full text to the viewer, indicating that they had reservations about the quality of the OCRed text. There were also low numbers (36%) for those that had undertaken zoning and segmentation and only six libraries (13%) had included features such as facetted browsing or extracting entities such as place or name.

Associated Partners
The Europeana Newspapers project will extend its network. Associated partners and network partners will be able to attend project workshops, information days and relevant meetings and are asked to provide content to the Europeana Foundation. During the survey, 35 libraries indicated they wished to be considered as Associate Partners. Guided by a series of principles from the survey, the General Assembly approved of the following eleven Associate Partners:

-National Library of Czech Republic -National Library of Wales
-National and University Library Ljubljana, Slovenia -National Library of Portugal
-National and University Library of Iceland -National Library of Spain
-National and University Library Zagreb, Croatia -National Library of Belgium
-St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, Bulgaria -National Library of Luxembourg
-Lucian Blaga Central University Library, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Marking the National and University Library in Zagreb Day we present you the virtual exhibition on works by Ruđer Bošković Virtualna zbirka djela Ruđera Boškovića.

The aim of the virtual exhibition is to present the digitized Bošković’s works preserved in the collections of the National and University Library in Zagreb and the Library’s webpages, books and other works and publications dedicated to Josip Ruđer Bošković, as well as to bring together in one place the available digitized Bošković’s works of other institutions.

The virtual exhibition represents one of the results of the project Restauracija i digitalizacija djela Ruđera Boškovića (Restoration and digitization of works by Ruđer Bošković) headed by Martina Pavec, NUL Preservation Department, which included the restoration of seven works by Ruđer Bošković held in the Manuscripts and Old Books Collection at the National and University Library in Zagreb and the digitization of thirteen books, three manuscripts and fifteen letters. The project was conducted in 2012 with the financial support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture as part of the larger project Hrvatska kulturna baština (Croatian cultural heritage).

In 2011 the Library marked the 300th anniversary of Bošković’s birth by an exhibition and its accompanying catalogue, both entitled Ruđer Josip Bošković u Zbirci rukopisa i starih knjiga Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu : u povodu 300. obljetnice rođenja, prepared by Ivan Kosić, Head of the NUL Manuscripts and Old Books Collection.

The software used in the making of this exhibition will be useful for other virtual exhibitions which will present the works of other Croatian authors digitized through various digitization programmes and projects aimed at the collections and materials of the National and University Library in Zagreb.
