Director General’s note
The essence of the National and University Library in Zagreb imbuing its very foundations is the Book, which we may regard as a form, idea or communication and define as an element in the quest for truth, i.e. knowledge.
The power to inform and communicate, pertaining to the Library’s role of a guardian and promoter of the values of the national heritage, at the same time makes it the keeper of all the different identities that we, as a nation, have assumed and lived throughout the history to this very day.
The National and University Library in Zagreb, whose activities have for centuries represented a force bringing about dynamic scientific and cultural developments among both the academic community and the wider public, remains a distinguished and irreplaceable institution in the context of the establishment of cultural and scientific policies aimed at creating a better and more successful Croatian society.
Manuscripts, books, newspapers, periodicals, drawings, prints and graphics, maps, atlases, blueprints and sketches, posters, sheet music, postcards and other valuable materials that the Library collects, processes, preserves and makes available for the public, are values which, coupled with the individual contribution of the Library’s employees, make possible the building of bridges necessary for the cooperation with all the libraries for which it acts as the central institution, other cultural and scientific institutions as well as with its partner institutions outside Croatia.
